THE FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN (FMS)

Would you Build a House on a Weak Foundation?

Either most people who exercise today are choosing the wrong exercise or performing exercises incorrectly, both of which contribute to increased risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries. These injuries are occurring due in part to weak and/or tight muscles that create faulty movement patterns, which restrict the normal movement patterns needed for everyday life, sports and physically active jobs. These faulty movement patterns if remain unchecked can result in long-term structural problems.
The key objectives of The Functional Movement Screen™ (FMS) are:
  • To rule out the risk for injury,
  • To look for faulty movement patterns and imbalances, and,
  • To develop corrective strategies restoring the body’s full function for exercise training and athletic competition.

Being fit and healthy is more important and prevalent in the United States today than ever before. However, are you putting fitness on top of dysfunction?

Who is a Candidate for the FMS?

  • Anyone starting out in a new exercise program
  • Anyone not seeing results in their exercise program
  • Anyone presenting movement restrictions and musculoskeletal challenges
  • Any competitive and non-competitive athlete looking to enhance durability while reducing risk of injury
  • Anyone performing physically demanding work such as fire fighters and construction workers

How Does the FMS Work?

The FMS is a series of seven tests, which measure how the body can perform fundamental movement patterns utilizing a ranking and scoring system to document fundamental movement patterns, important to all normal function. Screening the patterns determines limitations and asymmetries that can reduce functional capacity and physical conditioning, which lead to musculoskeletal injuries. Clients are ranked with each test and upon completion, receive a “total score”. Based on their total score they are evaluated for risk for injury, and for their weakest patterns of movement. An instructor then matches them to the most beneficial corrective exercises, tailored to restore their movement patterns.

Ultimately, the FMS is a great assessor for injury. The FMS is widely facilitated in professional sports, college athletics, physical therapy, athletic training and professional fitness training.

Corrective Benefits of the FMS and Corrective Exercise System

  • Continuous focus on the fundamentals of movement
  • Creates a functional baseline to manage progress
  • Improves functional fitness and athletic performance
  • Reduces the potential for training and sports injuries
  • Provides a self-improving grading system
  • Identifies physical imbalances, limitations and weaknesses
  • Provides an individualized approach to training and conditioning

Where is the FMS Made Available?

Instructors conduct the FMS onsite at the Functional Movement Center at 1446 Brevard Road, Unit 103, Asheville, NC.

Upon Completion of the FMS

During the final stage of the FMS, the instructor summarizes the results with the client and exercises are tailor-designed to correct all faulty movement patterns.

How Frequently Will a Client Meet the Instructor?

Clients will start out meeting with an instructor once or twice a week. Ongoing management depends on their rate of progress and can rapidly decrease to once every-other-week. Upon a re-screening by the instructor, clients will then be provided with corrective exercises to maintain on their own.

Re-Screening

Once a week during the initial three weeks, the instructor will conduct a brief re-test of two or three movement patterns that had the lowest score or the greatest imbalance. Four weeks out the instructor will conduct a full FMS to compare with the original FMS score. A passing score is 16 and above. Once the client has received a score of 16 or better, the instructor would then progress the client into the Functional Exercise, Strength and Conditioning Training Program or if the client is an athlete or has a job that is physically demanding the instructor would recommend the Performance Enhancement Training Program.

At this point, the instructor will spend less time training and teaching the client on a weekly or biweekly basis.  The client will learn to follow 4, 6 and 8-week training programs. These training programs will include exercise systems and concepts that will enhance fat loss, build lean muscle tissue, increase endurance, strength, power, speed, and agility while improving overall functional health and wellbeing.

At this point, the FMS would be re-administered based on the clients training progressions, athletic endeavors and other physical activities that would warrant a screen.
